Just two days after announcing that he has accepted a $250 million dollar offer from the LA Galaxy to play the 2007 Major League Soccer season, David Beckham's coach at Real Madrid says the international soccer star will sit out the remainder of the season.

Real Madrid coach Fabio Capello, citing concerns that the club cannot count on a player who has made such a commitment to another league, has benched David Beckham for the rest of the year. “He is not going to play anymore,” Capello told the press in Spain's capital on Saturday.

The LA Galaxy will kickoff the MLS season on the road in Houston, Texas, on April 8, 2007, while David Beckham's contract with Real Madrid does not expire until June 30. Vowing to fulfill his current contract, Beckham had not intended on joining his new club until several weeks into the MLS season. Nevertheless, the Los Angeles Times reported that the LA Galaxy sold an additional 2,000 season tickets within a few hours of Beckham announcing his big move to play soccer in the City of Angels.

It is unclear how Real Madrid's benching of David Beckham will affect these plans. Some are speculating it will provide an out for the global sports icon to join his new club for the season opener in Houston.

Just how much snap will be in that famous corner kick for the 31-year-old midfielder, after several weeks off the field, is a legitimate concern to Los Angeles soccer fans. David Beckham only started seven of 25 matches this season with Real Madrid, and sitting out the remainder of the season — especially if he does fulfill his contract through June 30 — might spell bad news for the LA galaxy and MLS.

David Beckham's heyday undoubtedly came with Manchester United from 1993 to 2002. There, he led the elite English soccer club to six Premier League titles, two FA Cups, and one European League Championship with his trademark free kicks and long distance goal scoring. In a match against Wimbledon in 1996, David Beckham scored a soaring goal from midfield, a spectacular shot that made him an instant star. He joined Team England later that year.

In international play David Beckham is the only Englishman to score a goal in three separate World Cups (1998, 2002, and 2006). Fans in the US might recall a dehydrated David Beckham, physically and emotionally drained, forced to the sidelines to watch Team England fall 3-1 to Portugal on penalty kicks after the score had held at 0-0 at the end of extra time. David Beckham announced he was stepping down as team captain the following day.

Part of the reason Beckham has chosen to come play for the LA Galaxy, according to sources, is to prove to the world that he is not yet done as a top-notch footballer.

But David Beckham is as much a brand name as a footballer these days. Already a rising superstar, his comet shot through the stratosphere when he married Victoria Adams, otherwise known as “Posh Spice” of the Spice Girls, in 1999. The couple became fast favorites of the celebrity-enamored British press, and David Beckham has subsequently landed lucrative endorsements with Gillette, Pepsi and Motorola, among others.

Major League Soccer aspires to join the ranks of the “big leagues” in American sports. In acquiring David Beckham, MLS and the LA Galaxy have taken a $250 million shot on that particular goal. Now they must only hope that the 31-year-old midfielder, despite being benched by his current coach, can keep those trademark corner kicks fresh enough to bring out the crowds this spring.

Throughout the years of apartheid soccer gave the people of South Africa hope and a since of excitement when there was little to be excited about. Soccer withstood apartheid,

With the first non-white soccer association being formed in 1903 (SA Indian Football Association) the SA Bantu Football Association was formed in 1933 and the SA Colored Football Association in 1936. After official Apartheid laws went into effect in 1948 these teams were denied funding and facilities yet they continued to play amongst themselves. On December 8, 1991 (following the fall of apartheid in 1990) the South African Football Association was formed on non-racial principles.

Soccer is the most popular sport in South Africa with a victory for a national team considered a victory for the country. On the day of his inauguration in 1994 Nelson Mandela left the official celebration to attend a soccer game between South Africa and Zambia. He was introduced to both teams during the half time break. In July 2007 thousands attended a game that was organized by FIFA to celebrate his 89th birthday at Newlands Stadium.

Now nine South African cities are gearing up to host the 2010 FIFA World Cup soccer tournament for the first time ever. The tournament will be held in Johannesburg, Cape Town, Durban, Port Elizabeth, Nelspruit, Polokwane, Bloemfontein, Rustenburg and Pretoria. South Africa will renovate 5 existing stadiums and build 5 new stadiums in preparation for the most important event in international soccer. You can see the 10 stadiums by clicking here.

The history of the tournament dates back to 1930 with teams from Africa participating since 1934.Cameroon's upset of Argentina in the 1990 world cup finals brought Africa onto the world stage of soccer. Now the time has come for South Africa to host the game they have loved for so long. With an estimated 2.7 million spectators and an additional 28 billion watching on television when the finals are shown the eyes of the world will truly be on South Africa.

Between the roaring crowds, thrills and goals fans may wish to visit some of the other attractions that South Africa has to offer. South Africa offers a diverse combination of people cultures and natural beauty. For the more frugal travelers South Africa may be one of the cheapest vacation destinations in the world according to SouthAfrica.info website.

Some of the attractions fans may wish to visit are Victoria Falls, one of the world's most spectacular natural wonders. Victoria Falls offers white water rafting, kayaking, canoeing, and fishing. Visitors can also go horseback riding and take guided walking safaris.

Kruger National Park and Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park are among the world's best wild life reserves, with over 30 South African National Parks to choose from this is sure to be a nature lovers paradise. South Africa offers a variety of Day Tours as well as scuba diving, shark diving, surfing and hiking.

South Africa's time has come and so has yours, be sure to enjoy all that they have to offer in 2010.

Not only is South Africa carrying the weight of hosting the first World Cup on African soil, the Bafana Bafana will feel the pressure to qualify for the round of 16, as no host nation has ever failed to advance past the opening round.

As the hosts, South Africa gained automatic qualification, but South Africa still went through the qualification process, and was knocked out in the Second Round. The team will look to take some of the experience they gained from reaching the semifinals of the 2009 Confederations Cup, also hosted in the country last summer, into this year’s FIFA World Cup.

Newly appointed boss, Brazilian Carlos Alberto Parreira, will be at the helm as he searches to regain the respect he has lost after coaching Brazil to a World Cup victory in 1994.

Much of the side’s success will depend on the efforts both captain Aaron Mokoena, a physical defender, and talented midfield maestro Steven Pienaar of Everton. Pienaar has quickly become South Africa’s star player in the absence of the country’s most successful striker, Benni McCarthy, who has been frozen out of the international set-up following an altercation with former national team boss Joel Santana.

Pienaar has reinvented himself since his stint at Everton and should be able to bring confidence and leadership the to the entire squad. His performances during the FIFA Confederations Cup prove that he will play a vital role in any South African success in 2010.

The team will also rely heavily on the unsung heroics of versatile, hard working and resilient back Siboniso Gaxa, and Tsepho Masilela, a winger who strikes fear into opponents with his rampaging forays down the left-hand side.

South Africa has failed to make it beyond the group stages in both of their previous FIFA World Cup appearances. Their first appearance was in France 1998, and despite a 3-0 loss to the host nation, posted draws with Denmark and Saudi Arabia.

Their next appearance was in 2002 where they were bumped out after the group stage; despite beating Slovenia 1-0 for their first-ever FIFA World Cup win. Fortunately for them soccer is played out on the pitch and not on paper.

I expect South Africa will have a very tough time of advancing out of this group, but there is a first time for everything and there can be no greater motivation than representing their country in a FIFA World Cup on home soil.

The one intangible advantage is that they will have the support of the home crowd.

My favorite Fussball-Trikot: Sami Khedira Trikot bestellen

Major League Soccer created the “Designated Player Rule” to accomplish two missions.

Firstly, the league wished to increase the overall performance on the field and thereby generate greater respect for the MLS.

Secondly, the league wanted to sign some fairly well known players in an attempt at a marketing push with the purpose of generating greater revenues and attendances.

However the current use of said rule will not accomplish either task. Instead if teams follow in the example of the L.A. Galaxy, the entire league faces extinction.

First let's consider the facts. The MLS does not run in the black, in other words, it loses money. Also, a number of teams either just built brand new stadiums are in the process of building new stadiums. The league also joined the new SuperLiga with Liga Mexicana, which will add additional travel expenses to the four MLS teams who participate in the tournament.

Second, one should consider the estimated worth of David Beckham. According to most sources David Beckham stands earn $250 Million over the next five years, in a league with a salary cap of approximately $2 Million. He will make over 100 times that of the rest his teammates combined.

Although not all of the $250 Million will be in salary, it is worthwhile to consider the fact that Liverpool FC, 2005 UEFA Champions, are currently being purchased by group in Dubai for $260 Million. There is simply no way that a retiree such as Beckham is worth the same out as team with such stars and young talents as Peter Crouch, Kyut, and Steven Gerrard.

Also, there is a cascade effect to analyze. It has already started in Dallas and New York. With the Galaxy signing Beckham, other teams will feel the pressure to make jumbo additions to their roster without considering the consequences.

Earlier this winter, FC Dallas dropped long time defensive midfielder Simo Valakari, who was once a mainstay for the Finnish National Team. Valakari was kept on by Dallas under the salary cap, but now the team is looking to replace him with Edgar Davids for an estimated $2 Million a season.

Davids was removed from the Dutch National Team before World Cup 2006 and has spent the season at Tottenham on the bench. The one time European great enjoyed time at Ajax, Inter Milan, and Barcelona, but his career is clearly over.

Davids is simply not worth the $2 Million, and to make things worse for Dallas, he will not have the draw of a “David Beckham”. The average America does not know or care about most of the international super talents from the late '90's. Davids simply does not have the name or glamour of a “David Beckham”.

In other words, the money spent on Davids will have little or no return.

New York is expected to add Claudio Reyna and Ronald Waterreus to the Red Bull roster shortly. Reyna will make above salary cap despite the high probability that he will spend the season injured. Reyna has plenty of time on the side of the pitch these past two seasons with a variety of knocks.

Waterreus was once considered a top flight goalkeeper in Europe and played for the Dutch National Team. However, he has been replaced by Edwin Van Der Saar and seen little action as of late.

Also, Waterreus will be taking the one position which America seems to abound in talent. Goalkeeping has been an American specialty. Most of the goalkeepers in the league have caps with the U.S. National Team. Certainly, New York did not need to look overseas to find a goalie.

Again, Waterreus does not have the name of a “David Beckham”. The fans will not show up just to watch some Dutch goalkeeper.

Both New York and Dallas are paying the big bills on their soccer specific stadiums also. Combining the debt of the construction with the signings of the new arrivals will only put the teams further in the red.

Although the Galaxy, who are owned by Anschultz Entertainment Group, can certainly afford a heavy amount of debt, the privately held teams will likely flounder carrying that kind of debt. This is not to suggest that Red Bull can't carry the debt, but if Kansas City, Salt Lake, D.C., or New England attempt to keep up with the Beckham signing, the league could certainly fold.

Talented players ready for retirement have come to the MLS before, but all played for far less money. Some of the biggest names to have played in the MLS include: Carlos Valderrama, Marco Etcheverry, Youri Djorkaeff, Aitor Karanka, Lothar Matthaus, Hristro Stoichkov, Piotr Nowak, Roberto Donadoni, Ramon Ramirez, and Igor Simultenkov. Most of whom came to the MLS in the twilight of their careers, like Beckham, but all of whom came for far less money.

There is simply no reason to pay retirees more $2 Million. It certainly doesn't help the league earn international respect as many journalists claim.

The reality is that Beckham is a “has been”. Outside of his set pieces during World Cup 2006, his play was uninspired, and players like Cornell Glen and Avery John of Trinidad and Tobago looked sharper on the field and kept Beckham in check.

This rule could have been used to accomplish its goal by analyzing target markets around each team's home stadium and signing players of good quality who aren't quite super stars. In other words, players could have been signed on contracts, similar to those on “player allocations”, from the best of the Mexican, Costa Rican, Ecuadorian, Polish, and Scottish leagues.

For example, a team like Chicago, who has yet to use its Designated Player spot, could spend the money on a Grzegorz Rasiak. Rasiak is one of the better players for Poland and plays in the English Championship for Southampton. He is younger than Beckham and has 16 goals in 25 appearances for Southhampton this season. He would tap into the Chicago Polish market, increasing ticket sales as Piotr Nowak did when he played for the Fire, but Rasiak would not carry the price tag of a “Beckham”.

This strategy would have worked for a number of markets allowing them to sign talented young players from national teams in Asia, North and South America, and Eastern Europe. It might have also been used to attract some young Americans who are playing overseas like Jamil Fearrington, Benny Feilhaber, or Jeremiah White.

Sadly, it looks as though the MLS teams are prepared to repeat the mistakes of the NASL by overpaying players who are in need of retirement. The burden of paying large salaries in addition to the expenses of building the new stadiums could prove most hurtful to the young soccer league. The MLS teams may want to note that no one cared when Miami FC signed former Brazilian stars, Romario and Zinho.

Four is the magic number as magical Messi destroys Arsenal.

There was a glorious three minute spell in which Arsenal were ahead of Barcelona in their Champions League tie last night. In the end that spell served as a tantalising reminder as to what Arsenal could have done if they had had their full squad fit at the Camp Nou.

I must say I was surprised to see a weakened team fielded by Barca manager Pep Guardiola. Bojan, Busquets, Abidal and Pedro are hardly first team regulars for the World, European and Spanish Champions but they still remained highly convincing as they limited Arsenal to only a few opportunities.

Lionel Messi. 22 year old Lionel Messi was undoubtedly the star of the show last night, scoring four stunning goals which did not flatter him in the slightest. A friend of mine said after the game that “Messi didn’t play he just scored four good goals.”

“And imagine him when he is playing well” I replied.

Comparisons to Messi’s performance could be drawn to Ronaldo’s hat trick winning performance against Manchester United when Real Madrid beat Utd 4-3 on aggregate in 2003 in the Champions League.

If there was ever a point to this game for Arsene Wenger it was that money must be invested into experienced, tough players. Diaby and Denilson tried their hardest to nullify the threat of Messi and Xavi but when the final whistle came they had been completely undone. They performed very well under the circumstances with leggy Diaby enthusiastically bounding through the midfield that lead to Bendtner’s opener.

Arsenal never seemed confident enough to really take the game by the scruff of the neck and really pressurise Barcelona on their home patch. It was almost like witnessing Wigan play Chelsea at Stamford Bridge- lots of hard work and the odd chance created but not a convincing performance. That’s how big the gap is between the two sides right now. Barcelona managed 31 goal attempts to Arsenal 12 over the two legs, and that speaks volumes.

It’s easy to say Lionel Messi was the difference last night, but that was because he was. He has now scored 39 goals this season in all competitions, and also managed a fantastic 38 last year.

Even Arsene Wenger said it- he is like a player from a Playstation game.

Real Madrid's 2009 summer spending started with the re-appointment of Fiorentino Perez as Real Madrid President. Once Real Madrid splashed out over $200m for Cristiano Ronaldo and Kaka from Manchester United and AC Milan, it became obvious that Perez's goal was to recreate the period of Real Madrid dominance known as the 'Galacticos Era'.

A little bit about the 'Galacticos Era'. The appointment of Fiorentino Perez as Real Madrid President in 2001 saw him make a new policy stating that Real Madrid would buy the best player in the world at the time, at the end of every season. The first player signed was Luis Figo from Barcelona in 2000, then came Zidane from Juventus in 2001, third was Ronaldo from Inter Milan in 2002 and in 2003 David Beckham was signed from Manchester United. These four signings made up the usual Real Madrid attack, the result was one of the most beautiful and entertaining attacks football has ever seen. Of course this sparked some inspiration for some other Real Madrid squad members and this saw Raul, Iker Castillas and Roberto Carlos be included in the list of names in the Galacticos squad. The final product was basically 'The Dream Team', superstars everywhere to be seen in attack and a rock solid defence led by goalkeeper Iker Castillas.

This is where the controversy starts, Real Madrid had spent millions upon millions on players, and the football world started to wonder if it was too much. Perez, however, was a marketing genius. If I were to tell you that by 2006 Real Madrid had almost doubled what they spent on those players because of the signings of those players, would you believe me? They did, in fact. Perez had thought this out, jersey sales had increased dramatically, ticket sales and fan base had done the same. So many other factors came into play to produce the final product- massive profit. Real Madrid had made billions and became a household name, Perez was being hailed as Real Madrid's savior.

Now with Perez appointed as President again for Real, a repeat of the Galacticos Era appears to be going on. Real have bought Cristiano Ronaldo, Ricardo Kaka, Karim Benzema, Raul Albiol totaling the summer spending to around $300m USD and Madrid don't appear to be finished. With reports of Real being very likely to bid for players such as Ribery, Maicon, Arbeloa, David Silva and David Villa during the January transfer window, Real Madrid are undoubtedly vying to restore their Galactico status and quite possibly become the best team in the world.

Despite this being mostly a smart buisiness move, it is also becoming an extremely smart move in terms of Real Madrid's status as a football club. So smart of a move to the point where the football world starts to once again question the consequences it will have on world football as a whole. If the continue their buying as they say they will, they will undoubtedly become the most powerful team in the world. Has football become too money based? Nevertheless, there will most certainly be competition for Real next season with Barcelona looking as strong as ever and Manchester United stars looking to step up their game due to the vacancy of star player Ronaldo who has left $131 million for United to spend on players. Still, the questions remain. Should Madrid be allowed to spend like this even though the consequences for world football are eminent? Should FIFA do something to prevent this from happening? What do you think?

The Allianz Arena stadium replaced the Olympic Stadium (see post Frei Otto, Günther Behnish. Olympic Stadium. Munich) as home of local teams' football matches.

In its favour it has the fully-covered seating, a host of commercial spaces underneath the stands, comparable to that of a shopping mall (event rooms, souvenir shops, restaurants, club offices, several food and refreshment kiosks, etc) four 4-storey carparks and an image which can be recognized from the motorway. The seating capacity is slightly less, 66,000 compared to 69,000. Against it, it is completely isolated from its surroundings, having the character of an impregnable fort and some carelessly designed indoor and intermediary spaces. The reason, according to the authors (see El Croquis 129/30 p276), is that all these areas are subject to the changes which the users will induce.

The emphasis is placed on the shell, previously tested out with less means on the St Jakob Stadium of Basel, and in the form of a crater, itself setting a precedent for the Olympic stadium of Beijing 2008.

These are the flags you’ll have to be waving this week in addition to that of your own country, because…

-…this is a week of international friendlies, as the managers of the national teams try to make the best of their time before South Africa, and the club coaches are left fiddling their thumbs and praying for the health of their assets. Eleven first-team Barça players have been called away from Pep this time, and should you want to keep an eye of them, here’s a handy guide:

-Tuesday, March 2nd (19,05 CET, 12,05 CST): Liechtenstein vs Spain (U21); the Rojita will try to start their journey to the European U21 Cup with a victory, helped by Jeffren, at the El Torralín Stadium, in Ponferrada; Bojan Krkic, who used to be the star of this team, wasn’t called up, so it seems it’s not only Pep who tends to ignore him.

-Tuesday, March 2nd (21,05 CET, 14,05 CST): Ireland vs Brazil, at the Emirates Stadium in London; Dani Alves will try, once again, to show Dunga that he’s better than Maicon, and Dunga will, once again, try to look unconvinced.

-Wednesday, March 3rd (20,45 CET, 13,45 CST): Germany vs Argentina, at the Allianz Arena in Munich; Leo Messi will try, very hard, to shine under Maradona’s orders, but can he do it in the face of Herr Löw’s army of orderliness?

-Wednesday, March 3rd (21,05 CET, 14,05 CST): France vs Spain, at the St Denis Stadium in Paris; a game that will gather six Barcelonistas (Henry, Xavi, Puyol, Piqué, Iniesta and Busquets) and that looks like a good chance for La Roja to shine again, unless Henry decides to take matters into his own hands (ba-dum-psssssh! Sorry, I had to do it).

–Wednesday, March 3rd (21,00 CST) / Thursday, March 4th (04,00 CET): New Zealand vs México, at the Rose Bowl Stadium in Pasadena. Rafa Márquez and Jonathan Dos Santos have been called up across the ocean to face the All Whites.

-Because things have been too quiet lately, FC Barcelona president Joan Laporta has decided that his sense of humour and charisma shouldn’t be wasted on normal life after he steps down from the presidency this summer, and has launched a website to make it into politics. With the slogan ‘Now it’s the time to serve the country’ (in which ‘country’ stands for Catalunya, don’t be mistaken), dear old Joan now has the opportunity to embarrass culés in a whole new way. Honestly, I wish he’d have waited until we could pretend not to know who he is.

-You know the improvement that we all noticed during the match against Málaga? Well, thank Pep and his motivational techniques. Deciding that what had worked in Rome would also work here, he forewent his usual pre-match talk for a video. Another Gladiator mash-up, you ask? The Avatar trailer? No. It was a report on the attempts (ultimately, unsuccessful) to rescue Iñaki Ochoa de Olza, a Spanish mountaineer, after he fell ill whilst climbing the Annapurna, two years ago. Pep says it was an attempt to show the players the values of teamwork and solidarity; I think that the poor guys thought Pep would abandon them in some godforsaken, freezing mountain should they fail to win, and that’s why we’re still ahead of Real Madrid. Good on Pep, I say, good on Pep.

-And I suppose you all saw Aaron Ramsey’s horrific injury this weekend. The young Welsh international is out for the rest of the season with a broken leg; should you wish to send him your best wishes, you can do so here, at the Arsenal website.
