It's tax time again and for me that means a nice tax refund, and some purchases. I usually get to spend some of it on some kind of high tech gadget and this year we went with a new digital camera. Ours is a bit old and we could really use a newer and better one. More pixels would be nicer and maybe a few extra features. I looked on the web as I usually do and found some new information from the same site I usually go to for recommendations on my electronics. CNET is a great place to go for those high tech recommendations from professionals, and you might ask why am I writing this review. It's simple, you want to hear from someone who uses things just like you do and in a way that you can understand.
I went from the slightly smaller Canon A60 digital camera to the higher pixel and better featured PowerShot A610. I was very happy with my Canon PowerShot A60 and wanted to upgrade to a higher pixel count with a few more features. I have been doing more writing and want better pictures, especially for smaller stills like close ups of models for a hobby magazine. Looking around the net I found that many agreed with Canon's dominance in the digital camera realm. I had only one problem with my Canon A60 that I have found others had, the picture on the LCD screen would get static in it and if I gently moved the lens around it would go away. I know this is not a fix for the camera and in no way normal but I can handle a problem that goes away for awhile and never gets any worse. I recently contacted Canon about this and they say that I can let them know if I want to send it to them and they will fix it for free as long as it is the problem they are having with this model. Something about the CCD, or image sensor, they got from a certain manufacturer, I suppose I will send the older camera back and have them fix it.
Now I have upgraded to the 5 Mega Pixels, 16 X zoom of the PowerShot A610, and I like it a lot. One thing I noticed with my older A60, the LCD screen on the back is scratched, hence I wanted a screen that turned around, not only for protection though. I have taken those pictures in crowds where I raised the camera over my head and tried to get the shot of the stage at the state fair but did not always get a decent one. Now I can set the screen to point down and get a good framing of the shot on the screen. Those were the main problems I have had with my other older digital camera, the screen being scratched and the lens static. I wanted to make sure that I didn't have the same problems with a new camera from the same company.
Now on to the good stuff about my new camera. The upgrade I made was to the Canon Powershot A610 for many reasons. I like Canons use of regular AA batteries and the fact that the camera has four instead of two. This means a longer battery life and less batteries to carry around for changing out the dead ones. And no stupid special types of batteries that cost a lot either. I use Energizer rechargeable batteries that are nice as I have a lot of electronic stuff now and always need batteries. I also like the flip out screen on the A610, for protection and to get those odd shots like up high or maybe around corners. Lookout kids I can now take pictures of you in those compromising poses in front of the bathroom mirror and just stick the camera around the corner.
The digital zoom comes in at 4X and the optical is 4 X so that gives you a total of 16 X zoom. I usually will keep the digital zoom on, but you can actually shut it off on the menu features if you don't want to use it all the time. This camera changed the type of memory card I use, my old one was a compact flash and this one is an SD card. It's smaller but one feature about the new card I like is the lock that comes on the little thing. If I want to make sure someone else does not accidentally erase pictures off the card before I have a chance to download them I can flip the little tab on the card to protect them. It gives an extra chance for someone to see you want to keep those silly pictures of the kid shaving the peach fuzz from his face.
The door for the card seems flimsy but I don't think it will be a problem, I thought the same thing about my previous models memory card door but it lasted these two years and did not break off. The menu for all the camera settings and buttons are very easy to use and understand but of course the camera comes with the whole range of books and even ones in different languages. There's one whole set in Spanish for those who don't speak or read fluently in English, which is nice. The four books are the quick camera users guide and a more detailed guide that is 4 X 6 inches, handy to carry in a bag with the camera for reference while out shooting. The third book is a software starter guide to help you with the programs for downloading, editing and printing your pictures that also come with the camera. The program is called Canon's Digital Camera Solution Disk, not very original but it tells you what you need to know. I have used the Zoombrowser portion since I got my first camera and it is great for quick editing and cropping pictures to get it ready to print. Nothing fancy or very difficult in the way of editing but it gets the job done, and it's free with the camera. For those who want to branch out and really work on editing their digital prints I would suggest investing in a good photo editing program such as Adobe's Photoshop Elements 4, which I also have. There is also a PhotoRecord which is an organizer, PhotoStitch which puts those multi-part panoramic photos together and some drivers for the camera to hook to your computer and download photos automatically.
There is a forth book, Direct Print User Guide. It is a good reference to directly print to a printer and tells you all kinds of helpful things like how to edit, crop and set up the printer. With the feature of direct print you do not need a computer, you can print photos right from the camera to some kinds of printers. This is the only book that has several different languages in the same book. The other three books are in either English or Spanish but are separate books, this has English, French and Spanish in the same book.
The camera also came with a wrist strap, four batteries, which will probably go into a clock around here and two cables for hooking the camera up to a computer or TV. Yes, I said TV, you can hook you camera directly to a TV and look at pictures on your television right from the camera without editing. To view pictures from your camera on your TV you just hook up the AV cable from the camera to your TV's AV inputs and turn your TV to AV. You get to look at the pictures or short movies from your memory card right on your TV, or use your camera like a web cam and zoom around the room. It works just like a little web cam if you flip the switch to shooting mode instead of playback, you can pan around and use your camera like a web cam. You can do the same with it hooked up to your computer and use a program on your computer like windows media encoder and a video card that uses video input. These of course are not the main reasons to buy a digital camera but it is nice to have all these kinds of extra things to do with it.
The PowerShot A610 is a 5 Mega pixels camera, which means on its highest resolution the picture you take will be made up of over 5 million small colored dots. Every digital camera works like this, but the higher the Mega Pixel the better image you will get. Today you commonly see cameras above four mega pixels and the numbers will only be going upward. The lens has a zoom optically or built into the lens using the lens moving in and out of four times. That means it can zoom in and make things four times larger. The digital or program inside the camera can also do this, so together you can zoom in and make things sixteen times larger.
The camera has the usual shooting modes like portrait, scenic, night and panoramic. There are others under an SCN setting on the selection wheel. There is night snapshot, kids & pets, indoor, foliage, snow, beach, fireworks, and underwater under the SCN or special scene setting. These settings, like the others, specifically use settings in the camera to make each type of picture come out the best. The color changing is a newer feature where you can specify the colors and how the camera sees these colors when it shoots pictures. If you thin the red needs to be more pronounced like more vivid colors for either red, blue or green, or lighter or darker skin tones. You can also tell the camera to swap out colors with other ones. These features can add whole new areas to experiment with.
One thing I would mention, there is a setting for underwater but that does not, repeat, not mean that your camera is waterproof. You need to buy the underwater case that costs about $120 or so to use this feature, and I'm not sure this is a good idea. With electronics if you go from one area like a hot environment such as above water and then take the camera to a cold environment like down underwater your camera can be susceptible to condensation. And with electronics this is not good. I read on a forum that a guy did this and it did not surprise me he got condensation in the camera and had to send it in for repair. Canon said the warranty did not cover this type of repair, corrosion from water, and would not repair it under warranty.
The Canon Company has many additional attachments you can buy, including the underwater camera case. You can get an adapter for adding on additional lenses like a wide angle or telephoto zoom lens. You can add any 58 MM filter onto the adapter, the adapter is a hood that goes out from the body of the camera and past the point where the lens can possibly go out the furthest. It has threads that are a common size, 58 millimeter, for camera filters used on older 35MM film cameras. Good news for me as I have a couple of sets of them from my dabbling in film photography. You can also get an external flash to enhance the built in one. These items all cost extra and are available at the online Canon store or you can search the internet for other places to get them.
The Canon A610 uses SD memory cards, this one came with a 16 Mega Byte one. That will hold about 10 decent pictures on the card. I bought a 1 Giga byte card that was on sale, along with the camera. In total I paid $324 for the A610 and the 1 gigabyte SD card. The camera was on sale, the SD card had a rebate and it was on sale.
I was very happy with my purchase of the Canon A610 and am having fun finding out all the different things it can do and how it is better than my previous Canon digital camera. I would recommend Canon for digital cameras as they have gotten the technology down pat and are firmly the leaders in the market. There line of PowerShot cameras leads in the digital camera field.

Rutgers University has suspended the Sigma Gamma Rho sorority after some of its members were charged with torturing at least seven women who wanted to join the organization.
The six members who were arrested are charged with aggravated hazing, which a police spokesman Friday called a possible “indictable offense.”
Under Rutgers’ Code of Student Conduct, a student found to have engaged in these kinds of rituals may be subject to disciplinary action up to and including expulsion.
The alleged victims came forward saying they were beaten and starved over an eight-day period. One of them, who asked to remain anonymous, told The Star-Ledger she suffered seven nights of beatings and was struck 201 times between January 18 and 25.
Police said the hazing occurred at a student apartment building, and at private homes.

I currently shoot with a EOS 1v… I’d love the equivalent of this camera in digital. At the moment my choices are limited to two models.
My heart is with full frame due to my experiences with my Olympus OM4Ti and my primes. I came across Canon by accident and do I regret my choice… Hmmm!!!
Well I was thinking back to a time when I had a mountain bike and I thought about trading it in to get another model, I took it in for a service at my local bike shop and the young man took my bike and started doing amazing feats on my bike, bouncing it on its back wheel then doing the same on the front.
I realised that it wasn’t the bike but I needed to develop my skills as a rider and stop blaming the tool.
I guess that what I’m trying to say is this… Both Canon and Nikon are good cameras. I currently have Canon and when it finally comes to the digital aspect of things I’m going to go with a canon. I love the SD/CF combination and the fact that the technology in this department is evolving. Furthermore I believe that it’s not what you got its what you do with it. I love the selection of primes… I dream of having a 135 f2 and if money was no object. I’d be the happiest man on the planet.
I hope and pray that one day Canon will release the digital equivalent of my ole lil film EOS because I love it… I really enjoy the banter it makes good reading and increases my knowledge.
I think that digital photography has come a long way and there are so many opportunities which are available which a decade ago would not of been deemed possible…

The group games have been completed and the knock-out phase of the tournament begins. The top teams from the 8 groups will be seeded to not face each other in the first knock out stage. Here are the teams that have qualified and their credentials for the remainder of the competition.
From Group A
Roma
Roma lost 2 games in the group stage, the first at home to Romanian champions CFR 1907 Cluj-Napoco and the other away to Chelsea. They amassed 12 goals in 6 games so scoring is not a problem for the Romans.
Their Chances
In the knock-out stages there is no room for an off day, as they had against the Romanians. However, since that defeat, Roma have been dominant and unlucky to loose to Chelsea. They lack the depth of other teams left in the competition to win it I feel. However they have a huge carrot in progressing to the final; the final will played in Rome and that would give them a huge advantage if they get that far. If they focus everything on the Champions League rather than Seria A, then they could do it. It will depend on their draw through the knock out stages.
Chelsea
Last season's runners up in Moscow were solid, but uninspiring this season. They lost 1 and drew 2 in the group stages. Only scoring 9 goals in the 6 matches shows the struggles they had to even get into the last 16. They needed and got a scrappy win against the resilient Romanian's Cluj-Napoco in their last match to clinch it.
Their Chances
Injuries this season have hit the deep squad at Chelsea. Essien, Balack and Carvaliho all having long lay-offs so far this season. It has effected the fluency of their play and the fears of playing they away at Stamford Bridge is no longer a fear the other 15 clubs will hold. It depends who they are drawn in the round of 16, but they will struggle to get to the quarter finals on recent form.
From Group B
Panathinaikos
The Greek outfit surprised a few people by topping the group and getting a ticket into the last 16. Inter Milan and Werder Bremen were the favorites to progress from this group, however Panathinaikos topped the group with 3 wins and a draw. They only scored 8 goals and conceded 7 in the 6 games.
Their Chances
Their level will need to be increased in the knock-out stages if they want to progress past the last 16 however. They do have a strong home record and may sneak into the quarter finals because of this, but they will not win the Champions League this season.
Inter Milan
The big gun from this group finished 2nd just 1 point ahead of Werder Bremen. Also only scoring 8 goals and conceding 7 they will need to improve if they want to go deeper in the competition.
Their Chances
They will face one other group winners, so they will need to fight for their lives just to get to the quarter finals. Something we do not often associate with Italian champions. I do not think they have a chance this season. I think they are in transition at the moment, and will consolidate and come back strong next season.
From Group C
Barcelona
The Catalan footballing powerhouse has been on fire in the group stages. 4 wins and 18 goals from the 6 games shows the power of the Spanish champions. They needed a win over Shakthar Donetsk in the last match however to secure top spot.
Their Chances
With the talent they have at their disposal, Barcelona are one the most likely to win the Champions League this season. They need to keep their level throughout the knock-out stages, but as we saw with Spain in the Euro Championships, this is something they need not fear with experience of Iniesta and Xavi in midfield. If they do not win, they will be very close this season.
Sporting Lisbon
Sporting have been less attractive than Barcelona in the group stage, with only 8 goals form 6 matches. Never the less they pushed their Iberian neighbors all the way in the group.
Their Chances
They have not been tested in the big competitions in recent years, so there are many question marks over their ability against one of the group winners in the last 16. I do not think they will get past the next round.
From Group D
Liverpool
Liverpool are topping the Premier League at the moment and went through the group stage unbeaten. With 11 goals to their tally, they have come through on top of a tough group very well.
Their Chances
I am yet to be convinced with this Liverpool team yet this season. Everyone, apart from Liverpool fans, is waiting for them to start dropping points and loosing the tight games. This has not been coming as yet, so if they can continue getting results, they stand a chance of winning the Champions League. I think they will some unstuck in the semi finals however. If they are still pushing for the Premier League, they may find their depth an issue if they start picking up injuries.
Athletico Madrid
Athletico also went through the group stage unbeaten. Just 1 additional draw saw them finish in second place behind Liverpool. Scoring 9 goals in 6 matches shows they were steady rather than outstanding.
Their Chances
I do not see them getting past the next round if they draw a big team. They could be fortunate and be able to go through the quarter finals, however this is the best they will do this season. They have a solid line-up however and with some more talent and depth they could be more of a force next season.
From Group E
Manchester United
Man U are the holders and managed to get through the group stage unbeaten. They only won 2 games and scored 9 goals in 6 games. They did have a difficult group so they will be happy to be out of ton time.
Their Chances
I think they will get through the next round, however the big games in the quarter and semi finals will test United this season. They have not been creating very many chances this season. That will be a worry with their attacking riches at their disposal. I do not think they will retain the Champions League title with their form this season.
Villarreal
Villarreal were only one point of Man U in the group. They also only won 2 games in the group. They were steady rather than spectacular during the group games.
Their Chances
They will test a lot of teams with their solid defense and quick counter attacking style, however against the big teams they will struggle. They could get lucky with the draw and progress through to the quarter finals, however that is where they will end their campaign this season.
Group F
Bayern Munich
Bayern went through the group stage unbeaten; scoring 12 goals in the process. There were no easy games in the group so their results were indeed impressive.
Their Chances
Bayern are never beaten easily. If they do not have any injuries to key players through the rest of the season, they have a chance to go deep into this tournament. Unless they come up against one of the big teams in the quarter finals, I think they will have a chance to win the Champions League.
Lyon
Lyon finished 3 points behind Bayern in the group. They lost only 1 game, and scored 14 goals in the 6 games. Their issue is with the 10 they conceded in 6 games. Considering they only lost 1 game, this is a huge amount of goals to concede.
Their Chances
I think the leaking defense of Lyon will be exposed in the next round. If they come up against a free flowing attacking force like Barcelona, Athletico or Roma I do not see them getting through. They will not pass the quarter finals in my opinion.
Group G
FC Porto
Porto topped the group with a in the last game again Arsenal. They looked hungry and energetic to beat a depleted Arsenal side. They lost 2 games in the group stages and only scored 9 goals and conceded 8. A 4 -0 mauling by Arsenal contributed to the goals against.
Their Chances
Porto have been steady but not world beaters. Even playing a second placed team in the next round I do not see them getting through. They could surprise, however I do not see them having enough invention and depth to sustain a push to the title.
Arsenal
The group stages proved similar to Arsenal's Premier League experience this season. They were unplayable against Porto a home, and very good against Fenerbahce away. However in between they were very average. Only winning 3 games and drawing 2, with 11 goals scored in the 6 games.
Their Chances
It all depends on which Arsenal show up in the knock-out stages. Their football when on form is good enough to win the competition, however on their bad days any team in the remaining 16 will beat them. Having finished 2nd in the group may actually help them, if they draw a big team like Juventus or Bayern in the next round, they will up their game and perform well. They are too inconsistent to make a prediction on, but I can't see them winning this season.
Group H
Juventus
Juve went through the group stage unbeaten. With Real Madrid in the same group this I a great result for them. They only scored 7 goals in 6 games, but only conceded 3. With 3 draws they seemed able to grind out a lot of results.
Their Chances
With their solid defense Juve are always a chance in the knock-out rounds. Finishing 1st in the group will also help them getting through the next round. In the quarter finals I think they will be over powered. I can't see them winning the Champions League this season.
Real Madrid
Real lost 2 games in the group stage, scoring 9 goals in the 6 games. They seemed to be playing on auto-pilot through many games in the group stages.
Their Chances
Real have been off their game compared to the heights of recent years. They have a new manager in Juade Ramos, who could turn them around with his experience in cup competitions. This will need to take hold very soon if they are to get past the next round. I can't see them turning things around that quickly however. I think they will be eliminated in the next round.
I think, depending on the draw in the knock-out stages, Barcelona and Bayern Munich are the favorites this season. Roma are also a chance if they get a good draw. The only other teams I can see as possible challengers are Liverpool, Arsenal and Juventus. Liverpool need to keep their streak going and Gerrard fit, Arsenal can beat any team when they are playing well, but don't seem to keep that standard up every game, and Juve can grind out results with their strong defense. It is Barca for me this season through!

I have only ever had one 'smartphone' prior to purchasing the T-Mobile G1 withGgoogle phone in November 2008. When it arrived at my door, and I first turned it on, I could feel the fear building in my veins. How was I going to make this a user-friendly phone?
The user's manual quickly became a phone accessory. I took it everywhere I went with my phone. I found the touch screen and scroll ball to be very easy to use and manuever. I personally still prefer to use the scroll ball over the touch screen. At times, the touch screen doesn't always do what I want it to, so the scroll ball ensures that I select the right application.
Learning to make a phone call on the G1 seemed to be my biggest obstacle. If I hold the send button too long, I get a voice dialer option. Also, at times, the phone goes into a lock up mode that won't dial the numbers I am pressing on the touch screen. This gets very frustrating. I have found almost every application to be very user friendly, except for just wanting to make an outgoing call.
There are thousands of user applications that a G1 owner can download, and many of them are free. I have applications for Yellow Pages, The Weather Channel, and english to spanish translator and many other fun and useful products. Most of the applications run smoothly, but at times, I get a 'force close' error. This often requires me to restart my phone and try again.
The built-in YouTube application is great for killing time. It allows you to instantly log into YouTube to watch the best videos on the web.
I have found the internet service on the G1 to be beyond my expectations. The pixel and viewing quality for individual sites is superb for the size of the screen. Loading time is decent, and I like that I can view websites in their full screen, rather than through their mobile sites.
When it comes to Wi-Fi access, the phone works great to receive wi-fi connections, however, beware of major battery drain. If you are connected to wi-fi access, you can expect your battery to be dead in just several hours.
The text message display on the G1 has to be one of my favorite features of the phone. Instead of breaking up each individual text, as they come in, they display like an instant message conversation. It makes text messaging much easier to read, especially when 1 text has to be broken up into the 2.
Quality if lacking in the camera application for this Google phone. Despite boasting a 3.2 megapixel camera built into the phone, the slightest movement can destroy a picture. I have yet to be able to take a picture without blurry edges. The sensitivity on the phone could definitely be improved.
The general ergonomical use of the G1 phone has something to be desired. While I like the flip out screen, I have found I have to hold the phone at odd angles to avoid hitting the scroll ball. The biggest issue is the lack of an on screen keyboard if you prefer not to flip the phone open.
Overall, the T-Mobile G1 phone is moderately user friendly. I believe there are still typical quirks to be worked out as more people become Google Android users. I think this is a great Android starter phone, that ovreall has a good quality with minimal major problems.
